The leaves of the bel tree, commonly known as the wood apple tree, is offered to goddess Mayuravalli Thayar here, although these leaves are generally offered to Lord Shiva. This is because once goddess Lakshmi did penance in a forest of bel trees in order to appease Vishnu, and since then the leaves of this tree became very dear to her. 

Devotees also tag two bells at the shrine of the goddess to get their desires fulfilled.
