The temple was built by the Hoysala dynasty in the 12th -13th century A.D. When their Empire declined, this temple came under the care of the Vijayanagar kings. After their fall in the 16th and 17th centuries, it remained autonomous for some time. In the 18th century the Wodeyar kings of Mysore gained control of it and started taking care of it. In the year 1760 they donated the temple to the Sringeri Sharada Peetham.
