Priest

The priests of the temple are from the families that follow the Vaikhanasa Agama. The current chief priest’s family has been in charge of the temple for the last four hundred years. Sringeri Peetha provides a basic salary to the temple priest. He cannot hold any other job and cannot accept any other money other than the donations made by the devotees. The temple priest is not allowed to eat or have anything cooked outside his own home and the day when he has to eat anything outside he does not offer worship at the temple. A relative is instructed to offer worship when the chief priest is travelling. The priest generally wears white clothes, but during special ceremonies he can wear yellow. The priest cannot enter the temple for 10 days after a death or a childbirth in his family, for reasons of ritual impurity.
