The Abhishekam or the anointing of the idols of the gods with water or other sacred substances along with the chanting of mantras, is done at least once a month. This is also called Pakshotsavam. Every twelve years an Abhishekam on a very large scale is done which is called Kumbhabhishekam. It is a sort of re-consecration of the idol of the deity which purifies the image and removes all mistakes done in worship which may have occurred in the preceding 12 years.

Apart from this, if a devotee wants to personally offer Abhishekam, he can donate the ingredients or money to the temple. The head priest does the ceremony on behalf of the devotee.
