Legend

Belavadi is connected to a legend of the Mahabharata. It is said that this place was called Ek Chakra Nagara where the Pandavas came to live during their exile and were hosted by a Brahmin family. One day their mother Kunti heard the cries of their host, who were lamenting as it was their turn to deliver supplies to the demon Bakasura and get eaten by him. Kunti decided to send her son, Bhima. When Bhima arrived, he incited Bakasura for a fight by eating all food that was meant for him. A great battle ensued in which Bhima killed the demon. The villagers were happy but the Pandavas had to leave as they their identity had to be kept a secret. In commemoration of this event the Bandi-Bana festival is observed every year at Belavadi, when a cart load of eatables is taken outside the village and a feast is organized.
