Subrahmanya Shrine

At the north-west corner of the prakara is a beautiful temple of Subrahmanya built in 16th century by the Nayakas. It is an excellent model of Nayaka architecture with attractive basements and sculptures. A six faced Subrahmanya is enshrined inside. The dvarapala guarding the entrance of the temple are of fine workmanship.
The Mandapa preceding the temple is a Nayaka structure of 17th century but it was open on the sides originally. The sides were walled up in 1800 CE by Serfoji.
Portraits of the Marathas who ruled Tanjavur in the chronological order are painted on the walls inside. Interestingly, the series begin with Shivaji the great. The names of the portraits are inscribed both English and Tamil. They were painted around 1855 in the time of Shivaji the last of the rulers.
