Deity

The idol of Ganesha is believed to be a monolith which was self-incarnated and discovered over 1600 years ago. Thus it was not made by any artisan and is said to have emerged from the soil. Unlike most of the deities in other Indian temples who face the east, the Ganapati idol here faces the west. This has led him to be known as the “Paschim-Dwar-Devata” or the “Paschim-Dwarpalak”, both of which mean the guardian of the western gateway. The idol is covered with vermilion. Another idol of Lord Ganesha which is made of metal has also been installed near the sanctum. This idol is also worshipped every day and it is this one which is taken out in a palanquin during various festivals. The sanctum-sanctorum, or the garbh- griha, is a structure with a small dome, which is made of white marble and has a dome of silver.
