Mahalakshmi Temple is one of the famous temples of Mumbai. It is located at the north of the Malabar Hill on Bhulabhai Desai Road in Mahalakshmi area. It is dedicated to three Hindu deities - Goddess Mahakali or Durga(Destroyer of Deamon), Goddess Laxmi(Generator of wealth) and Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of knowledge). Goddess Mahalakshmi is considered the central deity in Devi Mahatmyam, a religious text describing the Goddesses as the supreme power and creator of the universe. The Dhwaja Stambha, or the flag pole which is installed in front of the temple, with its close proximity to the seashore, makes the place a wonderful tourist attraction.
On entering the temple premises, one gets to see about 10.60 metres high single wooden block covered with silver sheets, the Dhwaja Stambha, and a Deepmala carved in stone. Much further inside the Sabhamandap, a Lion (covered with silver) can be seen facing the deities in the centre of the Sabhamandap. Geographical Location: Mahalakshmi Temple is bound by the sea on the west and the north and Bhulabhai Desai Road on the east and the south. From the Mahalakshmi Railway station it is just 1km away.
