The sanctum-sanctorum, also known as the garbh-griha is located behind the main mandapams of the temple located in the centre of the temple complex. It is square in shape and is built on a plinth. It has an outer and an inner wall, in between which there is a path around the sanctum for circumambulation (pradakshina). The walls are divided into levels by sculptures and pilasters cut into deep bays and recesses. The entrance is highly decorated. The sanctum is topped by a tower known as the Vimana. It is a massive 16 storeys structure of which 13 are tapering squares and is richly decorated.

Inside the sanctum sanctorum there is the image a Shiva linga, made of stone. It is 8.7 m high, and occupies two storeys of the sanctum. Only priests are allowed to enter this inner-most chamber.
