Architecture

The temple is nearly 1000 feet above the sea level and overlooks the Arabian Sea. The original structure was built in 1780. When it was rebuilt in 1890, the temple height was considerably increased. A tall spire was added to the original construction in 1900, but due to a lightning strike in the 1960s the spire was damaged. This lowered the height of the present temple. The architectural design of the temple resembles the temples of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The structure is made of limestone and marble, the latter being brought mainly from Rajasthan. Given that the temple stands in one of the most densely populated areas of the city, it is quite spacious inside. It is said that the sheer beauty of the architecture in white marble reminds one of Mount Kailash, the home of Lord Shiva in the Himalayas.
