The Jama Masjid was built over the course of six years from 1650 to 1656 at a cost of around 10 lakh rupees at that time. It stands on a high raised platform with three massive entry gateways on the North, South and the East, reached through a flight of steps. The Eastern gateway is the main entrance. Inside the mosque, there is a courtyard measuring around 100 m.sq. with a capacity of more than 25,000 people!
There is a rectangular prayer hall in the western direction, measuring 61 m. by 27.5 m. It has a magnificent facade of eleven arches. The central one is the highest as it signifies the mihrab or a niche which indicates the qibla i.e. the direction of Ka’aba in Mecca, which Muslims face while praying.
