Gurdwaras follow the pattern of Harmandir Sahib, the most sacred shrine of the Sikhs, located in the city of Amritsar. The only requirement is the installation of the Holy Sikh Scripture, Shri Guru Granth Sahib, which should be under a canopy. The Granth Sahib is kept higher than the floor on which the devotees sit. The classification according to the plan of the buildings of the Sikh shrines is of four types: square, rectangular, octagonal and cruciform. Gurdwaras vary from one to nine storeys, surmounted by a dome. A gumbad (dome), usually painted golden, is the crowning feature of any Gurdwara. Sis Ganj Gurdwara comprises of a huge spacious hall which has a golden canopy right in the middle under which the holy book, Shri Guru Granth Sahib, is kept. On the back of the canopy lies the sacred Jyot which is kept ignited at all hours. There are about 250 rooms and 200 lockers for the visitors who wish to stay there overnight.
