Sanctum

The sanctum sanctorum of this church consists of a seven-step high altar made of white marble. The statue of Mary with the Christ-child is placed high up on the altar to afford a view to all visitors from afar. The altar has a beautiful circular tabernacle to preserve the Blessed Sacrament, with words ‘PANIS VITAE’ (Bread of Life – in Latin) engraved over the door. On the main altar, the scene of Our Lord’s Supper is depicted in which the Lord is shown surrounded by his twelve chosen Apostles. It is carved on a marble plaque. The insertion of this plaque was done later by His Lordship Bishop Longinus Pereira to whom it was presented when he visited a Jesuit Seminary named Vinayalaya, located in the suburb of Andheri in Mumbai. As per the new rituals the priest need to face the people because of which the high altar has been replaced with a wooden altar in the lower part of the Sanctuary to conduct services.
