The timeline of the temple encompasses different periods starting with the Mughal emperor Akbar, who gifted the plot to Babi Bhani, the daughter of the third Guru, Guru Amar Das, as a wedding gift. Later the idea of a holy tank was conceived by Guru Amar Das in 1570 but it was constructed during the period of Guru Ramdas. Lastly, Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Nanak came up with an idea of the central place of worship for the Sikhs, and he himself compiled the Granth and placed the scripture inside the temple. The gold plating was later done by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1830.
