Festivals

The beauty of the Golden Temple is at its zenith during the festival of Diwali. Thousands of visitors gather to witness the splendidly lit temple accompanied by fireworks. Baisakhi is also celebrated with much fervour on 13 or 14 of April every year. It marks the beginning of Khalsa Tradition, a way of life for the Sikhs, laid down by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh on a Baisakhi day in 1699.
Gurpurab is another most important festival of Sikhs as it marks the birth anniversary of Sikh Gurus. It starts with Akhand Path, a continuous recital of Guru Granth Sahib, which continues for about 48 hours without any stop. The reciters take turns to avoid exhaustion and thus ensure continuity. This is followed by a procession where the followers hold the Sikh flag (It is called Nishan Sahib) and the Palki (the Palanquin which carries the Granth ).
