Ceremonies

The ceremonious coming and return of the Sikh Holy Scripture, the Guru Granth, is the main ritual. At around 4 am the book is carried out of Akal Takht accompanied by Gurbani kirtans (hymns from the holy text). It is then placed on the throne in the Sanctum for worshippers till 10 pm. The acts of opening and closing the Granth are called Sukhasan and Prakash, respectively. After the return of the Granth, the area is cleaned and made ready for the next day's installation. The Sanctum is surcharged with utmost spirituality after the installation and thousands of people wait in line to give their offerings. There may be a slight variation in the installation time during winter and summer months. Karah Prashad, a sweet made of wheat flour, ghee and sugar is served to all the devotees present in the Durbar.
