A magnificent festival is held at the time of Mahavir Jayanti, which marks the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th and the last Tirthankara of the Jains. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the half-moon day of the month of Chaitra which coincides with a date in April or March of the Gregorian calendar. On this day, Lord Mahavira’s idol is taken out in a chariot, in a procession which is known as the Rath Yatra. While the idol is carried outside, the procession sings religious hymns. After the performance of the ritualistic bath or the Abhisekha, devotees perform various acts of charity.
