History

Buddha gained enlightenment in the 6th century BCE and since then this place became a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and Hindus. It is held that in the 3rd century BCE King Asoka came to visit this place and decided to build a temple here. The original construction underwent changes and additions till it gained its present form around the 7th century CE. After this the temple underwent many additions and renovations. In 1874, renovations were undertaken by a committee under the Burmese King, Mindon-Min, with the permission of the Government of India. The repairs were completed in 1884 under the guidance of Sir Alexander Cunningham and Beglar. Many of the old sculptures were moved to a museum which was built beside the temple. The original stone railing were replaced by their replicas.
