Zoroastrians were forced into self-exile following the tragic downfall of the Sasanian Empire in Iran and they had to travel further to the South. The exodus was mainly to save their 3000-year-old faith from the Muslim persecutors and they finally landed on the coast of Gujarat, more precisely in Sanjan. Within a five year stint, they were successful in establishing the first Atash Behram, with the consent of King Jadav Rana. The divine light from Khorasan was finally consecrated and enthroned, and thus the broken culture of the Zoroastrians was restored.

The Parsi community in Sanjan became enlarged, and consequently, the temple became their center of religious activity. The sacred fire in the Atash Behram shed light on the Parsis for nearly 700 years. As ill-luck would have it, Sanjan was targeted by the Muslim invaders, and the Zoroastrians had to flee.
