Prayer

default

Daily prayers are conducted three times a day. The morning services, known asPesukei D’zimrah/zemirot’ consist of reading verses about the praise of God's, his creation and love for his people. Also read is the ‘Shema’ or the daily declaration. It contains one of the most important statements in Judaism, the verse from Deuteronomy (the fifth of the five books of Moses). The ‘Amidah’ is a silent prayer which is recited in a whisper during which no conversation takes place. The Afternoon Services consists of the recitation of the Amidah, with the addition of supplications on weekdays. On Shabbat (a time period which begins at nightfall on Friday and lasts until nightfall on Saturday) there is a reading of the Torah (the Holy Book of the Jews) during this service. The evening service consists of the recitation of the Shema and the Amidah. For centuries, the evening prayers have been chanted with traditional melodies.
