History

The monastery is situated on the outskirts of Darjeeling at some 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) elevation. The external structure of the building was built in 1850 by the Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, who was also the head of the monastery till 1905 till he went back to Tibet. Lama Domo Geshe Rinpoche succeeded. During his tenure (1910-1952) the 15-feet high statue was commissioned. During the Chinese occupation of Tibet many abbots fled to India and took refuge in the monastery. Dhardo Rimpoche became head of the monastery in 1961. He set up a Managing Committee, which has been formulating and implementing policies of the monasteries since its inception. He passed away in 1990. Three years later, a boy named Tenzin Legshad Wangdi, was recognized as his reincarnation. He was ceremoniously enthroned on 25th April 1996. Being thirteenth in the line of Tulkus, Tenzin Legshad Wangdi, took on the name Dhardo Tulku. The monastery is facing the financial crises since last two decades.
