Special Rituals

The Ekadashi Nitis are observed on the 11th lunar day of the two fortnights of the Hindu calendar month. On this day a Sevak of the temple scales to the top of the temple (about 200 feet high) after the night falls and burns a lamp. A large crowd standing below cheers him and chants praises to the lord.
Every Thursday, goddess Lakshmi is given a bath, dressed and decorated carefully for a union with Vishnu in the form of Jagannath.
On new-moon days the movable idols of Jagannatha visit the sea-god Varuna, who is said to be the father of Goddess Lakshmi.
