The main offering at Jagannath temple consists of food or Bhoga. On all days of the year, some fifty-six varieties of dishes are prepared and offered to the deities. Apart from this, several other varieties of dishes and special drinks are prepared and offered on the occasion of various festivals.
The daily Bhoga, made in the temple kitchen, is offered to the deities six times in a day. These are the following:
- The Gopala Vallabha Bhoga – This is the food offering to the Lord in the morning that forms his breakfast and consists of seven items. These are sweetened grated coconut, coconut water, popcorn sweetened with sugar known as khai, curd, ripe bananas and two other items known as khua and lahuni.
- The Sakala Dhupa is the mid-morning meal which is served at about 10 a.m. It has 13 items made of black gram such as the Enduri cake and Mantha puli.
