The three main deities which are installed in the sanctum are those of Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balbhadra and their sister Subhadra. The idols are made of wood of the neem tree which is locally known as daru. The idols have to be replaced as wood tends to decay after a period of time. The recreation of the wooden deities takes place in a ritual known as the Nabakalebara, which means the change of one's physical form. The height of the deities is between 2.5 to 3 meters. When touched the deities give a soft feeling instead of hard wood. This is due to the layers of pure silk wrapped on the core wooden body. The colours of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are black, white and yellow respectively. Even the shape of the eyes are different, with those of Jaganath being circular, and those of Subhadra and Balabhadra being oval.
