Deity

Devi Padmavati is the presiding deity of this temple. She is considered to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. The idol of the Devi has many striking resemblances with the idol of Mumbadevi, the goddess of the Koli or the fishermen community of Mumbai. This resemblance is seen in the fact that Devi Padmavati's idol does not have a mouth and is covered with vermillion (sindoor). The Devi Padmavati Chalisa mentions Her name as Pavaisvari, based on which the locality is known as Powai. The idol of Devi Padmavati is adorned with a nose ring, which is of the typical Maharashtrian style. She also wears earrings and a crown (Mukuta). She is draped in a colorful saree. Behind her there is a trident (Trishul) on which green glass bangles hang. These bangles are those which are part of the offerings made by the devotees. In front of the Devi's idol there is a small brass idol of Lord Krishna and his consort Radha, who are also worshipped here.
